Honorary Members of iSTAN

iSTAN is selecting outstanding members of the international Stage Art community who are supporting the inspiring efforts of iSTAN. New Honorary Members are:


Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss / Sweden

Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss is a world-renowned set designer, costume designer, sculptor and ceramicist. Though a citizen of Sweden, she was born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1928, and resided in both Austria and Holland before settling in Stockholm at the end of the Second World War. She collaborated frequently with Peter Brook during the 1960s and designed 19 productions for Ingmar Bergman over a period of 25 years. She laid the foundations for the first higher education for set designers in Sweden in the 1970s and is considered the grand dame of scenography/set design in Sweden. Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss was awarded "The Royal Medal of Honour" by the Swedish Academy (the same organization that awards the Nobel Prize for literature), and she was titled Professor by the Government of Sweden. In 1966 she won Tony Award for Best Costume for Peters Brook’s Broadway production of Marat/Sade.




Pavlos Paraskevas / Cyprus

Pavlos Paraskevas was born in Cyprus, in the village of Kontea, on 22 August 1956. In 1980 he graduated with a BA from the Department of Archaeology and Art, Faculty of Philosophy, at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. He also holds an MBA in Management and Public Administration from the Mediterranean Institute of Management in Cyprus. Between 1981 and 1987 he held the position of chief editor at “Chr. Andreou” Editorial House. Since 1987 he has been working for the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture, where he presently holds the position of Director, and is the Secretary General of the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO. He is the author and editor of significant works on Cypriot literature and poetry. He has also published various essays and articles in newspapers and literary magazines, and has cooperated with CyBC (Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation) for the production of radio shows on cultural issues.


Gottfried Helnwein / Austria

Gottfried Helnwein counts among the most well-known and controversial German-speaking artists today. Perhaps best known for his paintings of bandaged and wounded children Helnwein’s work explores themes of pain, suffering, injury and violence – delving into taboos topics in order to shed light on recent history’s unpalatable truths. Helnwein primarily focuses on political and historical issues as well as on sociological and psychological anxiety. Due to this, Helnwein has gained a reputation as a “shock artist” and “provocateur”. Since the 1990s he has concentrated digital photography and large format installations in public spaces. From the 1980’s on, Helnwein has also been involved in theatre, opera and ballet productions. Active in every aspect from stage design to costume and lighting design, he fuses elements of his photographs, paintings and mixed media works to shape complex and immersive surrounds for drama, dance and music.


Dmitry Krymov / Russia

A director, artist, and stenographer, Dmitry Krymov was born in 1954, and has directed and designed various productions in Moscow which have established him as one of the most original directorial voices of his generation. Krymov and his 'laboratory' present visually stunning, symbolic productions where every moment is original, hugely inventive, and surprising. As a designer, he has worked on about 100 shows. At the beginning of the 1990s, Dmitry Krymov left the theatre to work in the visual arts, primarily painting, drawing, and installations. He took part in many group and solo exhibitions, both in Russia and abroad. From 2002, Dmitry Krymov has taught in the Russian University of Theatre Arts (GITIS), where he has directed a course for theatre designers. Dmitry Krymov’s shows have appeared in prestigious international festivals in Europe, and his shows have been accepted enthusiastically by audiences in Brazil, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Estonia, and other countries.


Chen Xinyi / China

Chen Xinyi is a famous dramatist and director who has worked in drama for 65 years. She devoted herself to drama and film performance in her early thirties. Later, she went on to work as a director and playwright, occupations she still maintains to this day. She has directed almost 120 productions. As a result of this stunning contribution she was named as a State Special Contribution Drama Artist, and enjoys the funds given by the State Council. After obtaining the title of Chinese cultural figure in 2012, she went on to receive more honours such as the first country-level director, honourable director of the Beijing Theatre of People's Art, honorary professor of Central Academy of Drama, visiting professor of Shanghai Theatre Academy, and dramatic artistic consultant of Shanghai Film Group. The type of works directed by Ms. Chen include drama, opera, Peking opera and so on, many of which have led to the bestowal of the "Wenhua Great Prize" – which she has won fourteen times in her career to date. She has also obtained awards issued by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the CPC many times and other national level awards in China at drama festivals.

Xing Dalun / China
